Andy King returns to Leicester, he should be sold not loaned
Following Rangers terminating his loan deal, Andy King has gone back to Filbert Way. Though his Leicester City future is in severe doubt.
Well, Andy King the prodigal son has come back to his footballing home, Leicester City. The man with the one-off incredible record of winning the top-three English divisions: League 1, the Championship and the Premier League reappears.
Additionally he also holds the distinction of being the Foxes’ longest serving player. King joined Leicester as a 15-year-old after Chelsea released him; an academy graduate who is well-known, liked and admired as a professional and colleague according to all accounts.
Rangers loan for Leicester City man
While on loan this season at Steven Gerrard’s Scottish side Glasgow Rangers, King made two Premiership appearances and had three other outings for the team. Though his last game was in September.
They have now terminated the loan, per Sky Sports, sending the player home. He is thought to simply be surplus to requirements.
What’s next?
Sentimentality is an attractive virtue, but in football it is a detrimental psychological flaw. What I mean by this is that Leicester City Football Club should move on: sell King and don’t offer five-year ‘reward’ contracts ever again. It is unwise business.
Therefore, despite King being a definite club legend – someone who will undoubtedly go down in the East Midlands outfit’s history – his time should come to an end at the King Power. Leicester City should not seek to loan then reassess, unfortunately it is time for the player to be sold.
With the trio of James Maddison, Youri Tielemans and Wilfred Ndidi as impactful as any other three in Europe presently, there is no place for the midfielder at age-31. Dennis Praet and Hamza Choudhury are waiting as understudies so it is unlikely King would get any minutes, especially in the top-flight. His contract expires at the end of this campaign, where he may also leave on a free.
