Harvey Barnes needed to transition into a polished Leicester City asset. He has done that this season, now he should be considered for a senior England role.

This time last year, admittedly, it felt as though Harvey Barnes would possibly be added to that ever-growing list of promising elite players who can’t quite make it to the top echelon of athletes. Happily that notion, belonging to this writer, now seems to have been premature or even misguided.

It was always telling that Brendan Rodgers continued to persevere with his youthful winger – that loyalty is now paying dividends. In fact, so much so that Foxes of Leicester are recommending to Gareth Southgate – I’m sure he reads this blog – that the Young Lion be promoted to full senior international status.

Barnes should be named in a squad before Euro 2020 begins, without a doubt. A couple of preliminary substitute appearances will surely justify his inclusion to the nation’s boss.

In recent games, the left-winger has been in blistering form: seven Premier League goal involvements in 10 outings; along with one FA Cup finish against Wigan Athletic during that period.

Watching Leicester City

This time last month, Telegraph reported that Southgate was to watch the Leicester City man imminently – if the manager has done so, he’ll have been undoubtedly impressed with what he saw from the 22-year-old.

Meanwhile left-winger Raheem Sterling of Manchester City has struggled to keep his spot there, or do anything of meaning whatsoever in months. Having said that, it must be daunting being the world’s most overrated player.

Barnes has now made facilitating and scoring in the premiership his forte. They don’t just come against mediocre opposition either, the established big six know his name.

The England gaffer will name his squad imminently for the Wembley friendly fixtures versus Italy – March 27 – and Denmark – March 31 – before this summer’s tournament. We expect Barnes to be included in the squad for those clashes, at least.
