In a strange turn of events, Tottenham Hotspur are now in the driving seat for Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, according to the Daily Star.

The North Londoners would be up against Manchester City in this chase, who used to be the firm-favourites for the 23-year old at one point of time. Chelsea, on the other hand, seem to have given up, as reported by Spain’s SPORT.

The left-back position has been a headache for Jose Mourinho since his arrival the club. With Ben Davies injured and Danny Rose completely out of favour, Spurs are badly in need of a decent full-back to grace the left side of the pitch.

But they could be put off because of the same reason as Chelsea. Leicester reportedly rate him at £85 million, the same figure they demanded from Manchester United for Harry Maguire.

Besides, with most clubs set to take a financial battering with this season looking likely to be declared void, such a deal may be well beyond Tottenham even at their financial peak, let alone a time when every penny they have could be worth its weight in gold.

Even if they are somehow willing to pay, would Chilwell really want to go there? That is another big question. Even before that, will Brendan Rodgers want to strengthen a direct top four rival? Not if he wants to retain the club’s advantage over others next season no.

Surely, if it is about trophies or bigger ambitions, the England international would want to consider a different option.
