Sporting Lisbon interested in signing Islam Slimani
Sporting Lisbon are interested in re-signing Leicester City loanee Islam Slimani, according to O Jogo.
The Algeria international is currently plying his trade at AS Monaco in a season-long loan – his third since moving to Leicester.
For a change, he has a good season in Ligue 1, having scored nine goals and assisted another seven in 18 league appearances.
Those numbers are good anyway but to give them more perspective, that’s Slimani’s best return since 2015/16 – which is when he was at Sporting.
And now his former side reportedly want to bring him back. One would say, it is a move that suits all parties, especially the man himself, who has fallen off a cliff since coming to the King Power Stadium.
He has scored just 13 times in 46 appearances for the Foxes and it is that worrying output that made Claude Puel send him out on his first loan to Newcastle United.
It got even worse for him with the Toons, as he missed ten fixtures in total – seven because of a thigh injury and three because of a suspension.
In the four games he played in, his only meaningful contribution was an assist against Arsenal.
He was then sent out on loan to Fenerbahce last season, with many hoping for the spell to help him rediscover his form. However, he only made 25 appearances in all competitions and got just five goals. How times change.
When Slimani was signed from Sporting CP, he was expected to form a formidable partnership with Jamie Vardy, but he just couldn’t find that same goalscoring prowess from his days in Portugal. He probably wouldn’t now.
