Wes Morgan has probably played his last competitive Leicester game
Current Leicester City club captain and title-winner, Wes Morgan, has likely played his final competitive Leicester City game.
Seeing Claudio Ranieri there with ‘Captain Morgan’ actually made me slightly sad while reminiscing about the magical 2015/16 season. What a time to be a Foxes fan! And what a shame that it may be the last occasion that we see the Foxes lift the Premier League title. At least in our lifetimes – but you never know, wink-wink.
Ranieri and Morgan are obviously etched in Leicestershire folklore, and are integral parts of arguably the most cited legend in Premier League history. Everyone knows that English top-flight triumph was miraculous. Along with being unlikely to be repeatable by a recently promoted side in a relatively small city, with a smaller than average fan base.
Morgan might not be blessed with incredible grace or immense footballing skill and technique, yet he did something that all of us who look to superstars can admire – win the EPL. That’s not to say that the Jamaica international didn’t play his vital role: he scored goals, was a formidable defender and led like a lion – or a ferocious Fox!
Sad news for Leicester City supporters
Unfortunately for the Blue Army, they may have seen the final competitive Morgan match for LCFC already: a back injury has sidelined the skipper for much of the contemporary campaign. Meanwhile he’s been appointed to the PFA players’ board. Leicestershire Live quotes Rodgers as saying a decision will be made by athlete and club.
The previous, and possibly the last, time the Foxes faithful witnessed Morgan playing for Leicester was in the Europa League victory in December versus AEK Athens. That contest finished 2-0 to Brendan Rodgers’ team.
At the end of the 2020/21 season Morgan’s contract expires; there had already been talk of this being his swansong term. Hopefully at some point the centre-half, who is apparently still training, can be given a testimonial friendly at King Power Stadium with fans in attendance, of course.
