On Friday night, Leicester City played out a disappointing one-all draw with Southampton. In a game that had so much potential to repeat the events of ‘that game’, things fell short of expectations.

Amidst reminders of Leicester’s late-season collapse and Southampton’s nine-goal capitulation that threatened to exasperate even the most hardened supporter, the Foxes managed to rescue a point thanks to a glancing header from Jonny Evans.

Here are five main talking points from Leicester’s visit to the South Coast that reflects what was a difficult evening of football:

 1. Déjà what?

City’s return to St Mary’s, around a year and a half after the record-breaking victory was one highly anticipated by everyone at Foxes of Leicester. All the signs pointed to a repeat of the last outing, with it being a Friday night game, played in the rain. An early Southampton red-card after just 10 minutes served to increase the sense of déjà vu, but this is where the similarities ended.

Whilst the red card gave Leicester a numerical advantage, Southampton certainly seemed to benefit from a psychological advantage as a result of the perceived injustice. Such debate over Vestergaard’s dismissal is best left to the pundits, yet it did not seem to help Leicester’s cause and Leicester failed to take full-advantage of the extra man. This may be because the ‘transition-heavy’ game that occurs with the Saints usual style of play did not materialise, and Leicester struggled to adapt to facing a deep-block instead of a high-block which would have been expected.
