Leicester’s bigger picture as they look to sign lower league starlets
By Akash Roy
The Premier League has become a natural habitat for Leicester City since 2014. To reap those perks, City plans to develop further on newer avenues to grow.
Leicester City’s Big Project
Leicester City would look to recruit quite extensively for their age groups sides below the first-team this summer. That encapsulates this policy mainly for the U-23s, U-18s, and women’s sides. It is a positive indicator that represents the vision towards which the club is heading.
The club is looking for overall growth that involves long-term planning. We are already aware that City boasts of having a world-class state-of-the-art training ground in Seagrave. The spectacular facilities would provide nurturing of talents which can be pooled directly as the club’s academy.
The first team is doing brilliantly this season, currently sitting at third in the Premier League with the possibility of winning a silverware this year. Similarly, the women’s squad has earned their promotion by winning the Women’s Championship and would feature in the Women’s Super League next year.
However, things are a bit gloomy in the Premier League U-18 and Premier League 2 Div 1, where the club is just shy of the bottom of the table in the Southern division in the former and has been relegated to PL 2 Div 2 in the latter. The new plans of reinforcing every fragility can instigate as a big motivator.
Grimsby Town starlet Ben Grist
Ben Grist is a 16-year-old talented midfielder who has been around the first team of Grimsby Town since he was 15. The starlet has been linked with several Premier League sides, with Manchester United being on top of them. Suddenly, Brendan Rodger’s recruitment has scooped in and left United behind in terms of securing an agreement with the prodigy.
The teenager expects to leave Grimsby Town, as they recently got relegated from League Two. Sources at the Mariners have disclosed that the King Power Stadium is now expected to be the teenager’s next destination. Youngblood like that could exquisitely be used to develop the core in the U-18s.
Fleetwood Town starlet Josh Feeney
Another target for Leicester City is Fleetwood Town’s highly-rated teenager Josh Feeney. He has been attracting interest from a host of Premier League clubs and Celtic. He plays as a central defender and is building a growing reputation for himself. He only turned 16 this month. Despite his age, the starlet had been named in each of Fleetwood’s last three match day squads.
As per Daily Mail, teams like Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds United, Aston Villa, and Leicester City are all understood to have made contact with the League One club over the past few months. Josh had already been approached for his national allegiance by both England and Scotland at the Under-16 level.
The youngster was promoted to Fleetwood’s first team group since the appointment of Simon Grayson as manager earlier in the campaign. Leicester will do their best to convince the starlet to become a Fox, as we know how far a good signing from Fleetwood Town can prosper!
