Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana has suffered major disappointment as he sustained an injury in the Foxes’ dismal home loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Prior to the French prodigy signing his contract with Leicester, Foxes fans knew they were getting a possible gem as much as the transfer chiefs on Filbert Way. Although, when Fofana’s acquisition became clear, nobody could anticipate the impact he’d have on the team, as well as the amount of playing time he would be afforded.

Injuries were a concern throughout the campaign for the King Power team, as they were for every side; Fofana found himself deputising for Turkish centre-half, Caglar Soyuncu. And the former Saint-Etienne man was so good that rather than keeping out Soyuncu when he returned from injury, Brendan Rodgers actually altered his formation to include both players, along with stalwart Jonny Evans.

The aforementioned defensive partnership were excellent for most of 2020/21 as a trio; there were some blips, but mostly they became a standout collective in the Premier League overall. Fofana went on to become the only one of them to be named in the Press Association EPL Team of the Season.

Sad news for Leicester City star

During the warmup before the Tottenham game, Fofana had a slight hamstring problem but decided to battle on and take part in the match. However, after 20 minutes, he was replaced with Papy Mendy; a move which saw Wilfred Ndidi go into defence.

Upon leaving the field, Fofana looked very upset and emotional: naturally the 20-year-old was desperate to help his teammates to potential Champions League qualification, and perhaps also had the Under-21 Euros on his mind.

France are in the quarter-finals of the tournament and Fofana probably would have played but he has left the squad due to his current issue. He told his followers on Instagram how disappointed he was.
