England boss Gareth Southgate has given his reasons as to why Leicester City’s James Maddison was omitted from the Euro2020 England squad.

Foxes of Leicester has written extensively on the subject of the good James Maddison, along with the bad Madders. Those pieces – which you can read for yourself by clicking here – explain a possible greatness to come, as well as how some gifted footballers, and athletes in general, can become ‘wasted talent’. Leicester fans will hope their favourite doesn’t go that way!

The skill set possessed by Maddison inevitably means he’ll always be judged more often than lesser players. And that especially goes for output: from key passing to assists and goals are an integral element of a traditional No.10’s game. Though modern exponents are judged with even more scrutiny and publicly harsher.

Between December and February the playmaker managed his greatest portion of any LCFC season for productivity – producing the goods! In that time period the former Norwich City man provided 14 direct contributions leading to, or scoring goals. Nevertheless, the eye-catching midfielder with the increasingly high profile was omitted, or rather, left out of the England Euro2020 squad – 2021, really – because of fitness and form issues.

Another drastically uncontrollable aspect of Maddison’s professional life – apart from bettering the opponents in question during every meeting – which is holding his fledgling international career back at present, is the sheer quality of the exceptional Jack Grealish of Aston Villa. Not to mention underrated Chelsea attacking midfielder Mason Mount, and Phil Foden, the Manchester City wonderkid.

Three Lions gaffer Gareth Southgate recently told media why he did not include Maddison in his provisional roster:
