Leicester: Wayne Rooney praises Jamie Vardy despite legal battle
According to England and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy should be in the Three Lions team at Euro2020.
If you remember Jamie Vardy’s back heeled flicked goal versus Germany for England, you will be aware that the striker is underrated on an international level, as he certainly also is in domestic football.
To be amongst the greatest ever Premier League goalscorers in the statistical charts after only starting his top-flight career at the age of 27, is an absolutely stunning achievement by the former Fleetwood Town man.
To place yourself just below Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney etcetera whilst playing for the relatively smaller team of Leicester, is remarkable. Nothing short of inexplicable. What a guy Vardy is!?
Talking of the ex-Manchester United hitman, Rooney showered praise and respect onto the Foxes’ No.9 in reference to his ability during the Derby manager’s recent return to writing. That is in spite of the pair’s wives currently engaging in legal battle:
"“One man I wish was in Gareth’s [Southgate’s] squad is Jamie Vardy. “I would have tried absolutely everything to lure him out of retirement for these finals.“I know some people may be surprised at this, especially with the legal case between my wife and Jamie’s wife, but this is my honest football opinion.”From LCFC Live, via The Times"
Vardy retired from featuring for his country a while back in order to focus on his club career with Leicester as he went further into his 30s. There is little sign of him slowing down in a physical or appearance sense as of yet; although, his scoring did die down in the second part of the term.
Nevertheless, the 34-year-old showed class, maturity and depth to often turn provider for Kelechi Iheanacho, who became the main finisher on Filbert Way as 2020/21 expired. An England recall was probably never on the cards, to be fair. But the compliment, especially in times of suing between families, is special.
