Leicester City’s star defender Caglar Soyuncu’s former position and footballing idol will definitely surprise some people.

Leading Turkish football expert and friend of Foxes of Leicester, Emre Sarigul, recently produced a fascinating article on Leicester star, Soyuncu, which explained how the latter is somewhat of a pioneer with regard to Turkish players‘ route to finding stardom. You can read all about our ‘Cags’ here at The Guardian.

FoL is currently working on a piece with Mr Sarigul about Merih Demiral, his suitability for joining LCFC, as well as the feasibility of a transfer. Please look out for that and give us your feedback.

In the article on Soyuncu there was also a section explaining how the commanding centre-half, who has both positive modern and retro elements in his play, begun life as a young footballer playing as striker. I know, right.

Strange as that revelation may seem, I have a conjured image in my mind of the former Freiburg man leaping above less magnetic centre-backs to score like an old-fashioned 1960s English centre-forward. However, Cags is such an iconic part of the King Power side’s defence that it is difficult to imagine him deployed anywhere else in actuality.

In addition, Sarigul revealed how Soyuncu’s idol in the form of a professional footballer was in fact none other than Wayne Rooney, then of Manchester United.

"“When I played as a forward, Wayne Rooney was my idol, I was short at the time so I loved that a striker who was young and not tall managed to become a star.“After becoming a defender, Carles Puyol became my hero. I loved his bravery, character and leadership.”– Caglar Soyuncu, TamSaha Magazine, via The Guardian"
