Leicester City: Three standout players from the second pre-season game
By Akash Roy
Leicester City played their second match of the pre-season against the newly relegated Championship side Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park stadium.
The Foxes showed significant comparable improvements, which are contrasting to their last game against Burton. Despite a promising effort, Wycombe won the fixture by a 1-0 margin. City fans shouldn’t be disheartened by the outcome yet.
However, it would be a concern if the Foxes remain unable to find their footing before the August 7th trip to Wembley. The pressing issue for the manager, Brendan Rodgers, should be to tactically chalk out the answers to why his side is not performing very well in its offensive department.
The next fixture will be a vital one for the team to better display football and, if better, a winning result. QPR has performed brilliantly against Manchester United in their pre-season victory, so as far as finding a challenge goes, this is probably it.
If you are still not content with the challenge, you’d have to wait for our pre-season’s final fixture. It is against the UEFA Europa League winners, Villarreal. It is harsh to be nitpicky or critical towards the players, particularly in a pre-season game. So we focus mainly on the positive takeaways from the ninety minutes.
Three Leicester City players who stood out
Judging solely by each individual’s performances in yesterday’s game, three players caught FoL’s attention.
Tawanda Maswanhise: He was a real revelation to the Blue army over the two pre-season games. Maswanhise is a player to keep your eyes on. Despite being a creative right-winger he was used by the boss as a left-winger.
Over the combined ninety minutes he derived from both the games, he was always a threat for the opposition, cutting spectacularly inside from the left. At times he took more than one defender and deceived them with his exceptional control.
Despite the young age, he looks tailor-made for earning more opportunities in a senior squad. His fearless approach and sprints did not go unnoticed by the majority.
Boubakary Soumaré: I was skeptical when I saw Rodgers was starting two CDMs in a 4-4-2 formation during the first 45 minutes. I was proven wrong because the boss planned to utilize both similar players in different roles.
While Ndidi was holding off the oppositional threats such as Akinfenwa, Soumaré was dictating a bit ahead in a box-to-box midfielder role. The fans got plenty of glimpses of the Frenchman’s distribution and forward-thinking approaches. Just his second game in English football, I can’t complain as the positives outweigh the negatives.
Thanawat Suengchitthawon: We are heartbroken for Suengchitthawon. He had to leave the field early due to struggling against an issue. With the limited minutes he got, he was the star of the second half: his read of the oppositional defense was spectacular.
He performed the role of being an orchestrator and looked magnificent doing it. We hope he is okay as the pre-season is a perfect place for him to continue impressing the boss for his consideration.
