Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers currently has a senior Foxes squad containing 34 players, but the Premier League only permit a 25-man roster. Which athletes will likely be omitted?

Leicester have lost two friendlies and subsequently drew the last one, while one practice game remains against Villarreal on Wednesday night. But these matches really cannot be used to gauge a team prior to the new season beginning.

The clash versus the Spaniards will be the final time – apart from meeting Manchester City in the Charity Shield – for certain players to impress Brendan Rodgers before he chooses his 25-man Premier League squad for 2021/22.

Luckily, Luke Thomas and Wesley Fofana are under 21-years-of-age and are surplus additions, which would make the number 27. Yet Rodgers is said to prefer to stay within the allotment, so Foxes of Leicester believes the 25 will be as follows:

Eldin Jakupovic, Danny Ward, Kasper Schmeichel, Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans, Ricardo Pereira, Wesley Fofana, Luke Thomas, Timothy Castagne, James Justin, Ryan Bertrand, Wilfred Ndidi, Papy Mendy, Youri Tielemans, James Maddison, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Boubakary Soumare, Dennis Praet, Marc Albrighton, Harvey Barnes, Ayoze Perez, Patson Daka, Jamie Vardy, Kelechi Iheanacho.

That collective contains 24 men, hopefully a new winger is added; there is also the possibility of adding a centre-back too, as Thomas and Fofana are unregistered.

This leaves Daniel Amartey, Hamza Choudhury – who could be sold – Kamal Sowah, Filip Benkovic, Vontae Daley-Campbell, Daniel Iverson – a loan being probable – Khanya Leshabela, Rachid Ghezzal, Thanawat Suengchitthawon and Tawanda Maswanhise potentially left out of the roster. Amartey is admired by the gaffer and will possibly make the cut, I’m not sure that choice is best for LCFC or him.

As FoL sees the situation, Maswanhise is the most unlucky of that unfortunate group. Those athletes may still be with the senior side, just not featuring in the EPL; though it is more feasible that they’ll be loaned or revert to the Under-23 or Development squads.
