Leicester v Man City: team news and expected starting XIs
Leicester City face Manchester City in the community shield as they look to win early silverware. Here is the team news for both camps.
On the 7th August 1971, second division winners Leicester City were invited to take part in the Charity Shield match against Liverpool FC at Filbert Street, which saw them triumph 1-0 with a 15″ minute goal.
50 years after, Brendan Rodgers’ side have a chance to relive that magic and win silverware for the Foxes.
However, both blues will be without key players and lack full fitness. Here is everything you need to know and a predicted starting XI for each.
Leicester City injury news
As reported by LeicestershireLive, there are several King Power players Rodgers will be without for this match. Timohty Castagne is ruled out due to only recently returning to contact training, though he should return for the Wolverhampton Wanderers league opener.
Outside of Castagne, several players are injured and so cannot feature. These include Papy Mendy, James Justin, Jonny Evans, and Wesley Fofana. These absences will no doubt determine the team line-up.
Manchester City injury news
Manchester City have a few players who simply won’t be able to feature, either due to injury or as a result of fixture congestion in the coming season.
There are three notable absences from the starting XI. Jack Grealish will not start – though he will be on the bench – due to only recently training with the team.
Phil Foden will be absent after sustaining an injury on England duty. Kevin De Bruyne will also not feature due to injury.
This does not make Man City less dangerous, though their main talisman is out.
Predicted teams
During this match, the two sides can name nine bench players, with six substitutions allowed.
We can expect Leicester to employ a 3-4-1-2 formation – the same one which was used to beat Man City previously.
I expect a starting XI of:
Kasper Schmeichel, Caglar Soyuncu, Ryan Bertrand, Daniel Amartey, Ricardo Pereira, Luke Thomas, Youri Tielemans, Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison, Jamie Vardy, and Kelechi Iheanacho.
I also expect a subs bench of:
Danny Ward, Filip Benkovic, Boubakary Soumare, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Dennis Praet, Harvey Barnes, Marc Albrighton, Ben Nelson, and Patson Daka.
For Manchester City, it may be a little more orthodox:
Ederson, Nathan Ake, Ruben Dias, Oleksander Zinchenko, Kyle Walker, Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan, Rodrigo Cascante, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, and Gabriel Jesus.
I will not try to guess what world-class bench Pep Guardiola will employ.
Up the Foxes!
