Leicester injuries: Will Maddison and Bertrand play vs West Ham?
By Nathan Wong
Leicester City as always are dealing with yet more injuries and absences despite the season having just started. After a hard-fought 1-0 win, the latest injury concerns come in the form of Ryan Bertrand and James Maddison.
Experienced full-back Ryan Bertrand has impressed throughout pre-season, with some excellent performances at left-back. Unfortunately, Bertrand was denied his Premier League debut with the Foxes due to a positive lateral flow test for COVID-19. This was confirmed by both Brendan Rodgers in his pre-match interview and Bertrand himself on his Instagram story.
Further details of this are likely to come in the next few days, with more information to come from the LCFC medical team. It’s likely therefore that the Englishman will be out for at least 10 days in isolation, meaning he may well miss the trip to West Ham. Nevertheless, Luke Thomas has proved that he can compete with the very best, as the two full-backs compete for the first-choice position.
James Maddison on the other hand did play at the weekend, although he suffered a knock to his back during the game. Despite trying to play on, he was eventually substituted off after 60 minutes although Rodgers stressed the change was more tactical rather than enforced.
Maddison’s potential injury layoff is currently unknown, with Rodgers stating the attacking midfielder would receive treatment on Sunday before a reevaluation of the situation. There are more details here.
As such, Maddison’s involvement remains in the balance, although there’s a good chance he will play against West Ham, as long as it’s nothing more than a minor knock. What’s more concerning is the frequency of injuries Maddison is suffering, although some can be attributed to the rough treatment he faces at the hands of the opposition.
Leicester City news round-up
The other short-term absentees for the Foxes remain Timothy Castagne and Jonny Evans. The former is now able to train with a special protective mask and will be involved in the first-team action soon.
Evans will also hopefully be fit after the international break to help ease Leicester’s centre-back struggles, with the Northern Irishman returning to training after a Plantar Fascia problem. Let’s hope both will return swiftly and that LCFC are spared any further additions to the treatment room.
