This is why Leicester sold starlet Sowah
By Akash Roy
After monthlong speculations on Leicester City’s outgoings, Kamal Sowah emerged as the “perplexing choice” to bid adieu to the East Midlands permanently.
The choice for the Ghanian to leave for Jupiler Pro League’s Club Brugge was a choice that expressed the precision of the period’s momentum. The 21-year-old joined Leicester City back in 2018. Since then, he has spent most of his time, three years to be precise, developing at City’s sister club OH Leuven in Belgium.
Within those three years, he was being used to playing in different attacking roles. He played most of them as both left or right-wingers and as a second striker in many games. Last year he found his footing in Belgium’s first division and made a lasting impression noticed by the domestic champions.
Leicester City hits a chord with Club Brugge
Club Brugge and Leicester City agreed for a permanent transfer for a fee of around £7m in the final days of the summer transfer window. Such a fee is a rarity for a player that has not featured for the Foxes in any competition. The reason for that is the timing of the whole thing.
"“You have to be fair to the player. He did great in Belgium and there was a great market there for him, which shows you by the number that they’ve paid for him, that he’s seen as a talent. Just you have to assess it. He wasn’t going to play for us, we’ve got players ahead of him in his position, and he’s at the stage in his career where he wanted to continue progressing.”– Brendan Rodgers, via Leicester Mercury"
Bruges just secured a place to play in the group stages for another annual installment of the Champions League this season. Theirs is the “group of death” that includes powerhouses like Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and RB Leipzig. Of course, to at least put up a fight, they needed a promising starlet that has impressed them in the past.
So banking on that Champions League and league-winning prize money, the Blauw-Zwarts did not waste much time to pursue King Power group’s Kamal Sowah, offering a very agreeable fee. Sowah scored eight goals and registered six assists to his name last season.
"“Where he’s come from, it’s an amazing story, how well the boy has done. He was fantastic over the course of pre-season, a really humble man who worked hard, played the pre-season games and now gets the chance to continue his career. We wish him all the very best.”– Rodgers concluded"
The manager, Brendan Rodgers, explains Sowah was trailing behind in the pecking order. With Leicester’s added interest to buy a replacement winger, Rodgers gave a thumbs up for the Ghanian’s move away from Filbert Way.
