Leicester City signed former Fulham loanee Ademola Lookman on loan. The player has a preferred position which might irritate Foxes supporters.

The transfer window was marred by dreams of prolific right-wingers which never came to fruition. Even with the fantastic window, the departure of Dennis Praet and lack of a RW is a little upsetting.

Ademola Lookman was brought in to fill the gap left by Praet in the squad, while providing more positional and tactical versatility than the Belgian midfielder.

Let us explore the journey ‘Ade’ took and where he believes he performs best.

Leicester City’s new attacker

Ade started his career at Charlton Athletic during the famous 15/16 season. He played 24 games in that debut season, scoring five and assisting once.

Since then, the English winger has played plenty of first team football, though he has not settled at any club. Lookman has played for Everton, RB Leipzig, and Fulham before joining the Foxes.

As Smarterscout stats show, Lookman has developed into a balanced attacker capable of performing duties in several positions. I will highlight a few stats here.

The young winger has secured an 86/100 rating for progressive passing (towards goal), a 70/100 for the quantity of challenges he makes, a 63/100 for his ball retention, and a 61/100 for disruption.

In short, Brendan Rodgers has brought in a player who progress the ball well either at feet or with a pass, is tactically versatile, and has learned how to defend as part of a team.

Where he fits in

However, it is unclear whether or not Leicester City needed a player like him over – say – a prolific right-winger. It is also not clear whether that will be his most used position, or if there are other plans for him.

As reported by LeicestershireLive, both Ade and Rodgers have explained his best position and role, which will irritate supporters but is certainly understandable.

For most of his career, Lookman has performed his game on the left-flank of teams, from possessive to compact defensive teams. He has also dabbled on the right-flank and performed well as an attacking-midfielder.

However, despite primarily being a left-winger, Ade offers something different to Harvey Barnes.

‘Barnsey’ uses his pace and agility to knock balls passed defenders and rush beyond the defensive line. He is direct and will cut inside towards the half spaces instead of crossing the ball.

Our number 19 offers physicality on the wing; he tracks back well and disrupts opposition play with pressure from behind and attempts to cut into passing lanes. Lookman’s ability to cross from the left is also admirable and absent from Barnes.

Leicester have plenty of counter-attacking and pacey options, so Lookman offers that versatility to play more possessive and defensively sound football. It is yet to be seen how much Rodgers will play the new attacker.
