3 Talking points from Leicester’s unexpected draw with Burnley

There was nothing to separate the sides when the final whistle blew for Leicester City to yield just a single point from a winnable fixture at home.

Question marks scattered all over the place today when the Premier League fixture against Burnley ended in an unexpected stalemate draw with a scoreline of two each. Brendan Rodgers yet again displayed his questionable choices with the initial lineup and followed them up with disagreeable substitutions.

We should be considering ourselves lucky that we managed at least to scoop up a point from this game as it looked like slipping out of our hands for the most part. However, this draw feels like a loss. The topsy turvy game had an impact on our emotions as we went on an unwarranted roller coaster ride.

Recurring stubbornness: We know Brendan Rodgers can be stubborn with his questionable choices. Today was another example of that but on a lesser content. The decision of leaving Kelechi Iheanacho out again was a shock to many Leicester City fans.
His chance-creating capability and good performances from the last season make you think why hasn’t he been given any legitimate chance in the league. This point was further validated when the Nigerian came on to replace Boubakary Soumaré and then brilliantly assisted Jamie Vardy to equalize the game.

Defense in shambles: The recurring theme of not being good at defending set-pieces has been a pressing issue. Additionally, there was a lack of communication between the defensive backline. It certainly did not help the side when Jannik Vestergaard’s work rate was visibly slow.
Without the compass that is Jonny Evans, Çağlar Söyüncü looked lost. The man-marking was horrendous as it didn’t take much for Matěj Vydra to find enough space in the box to deliver a near-perfect cross to Maxwel Cornet for a volleyed finish.

Vardy to the rescue: It was again the main frontman of the Foxes who saved what remained of this game. It is simply astonishing that Vardy has scored five times in his six appearances this season. We all know he is ageing like a fine wine.
Today, however, things started with an unusual own goal. It happened accidentally by an ill-oriented Vardy clearance that went rogue. Fortunately enough, he was able to score a brace in the correct net by breaching the opposition’s territory.

It does become a recurring theme and ultimately a worry when the side is over-relying on Vardy, again to produce a match-winning performance. He is 34, and there shouldn’t be so much added responsibility on him. LCFC need to develop the next frontman in Patson Daka before he becomes rusty while warming the bench.
