Ex-Leicester men’s sons may feature for Man United

Leicester City could face an unexpected Manchester United line-up with a few regular starters missing due to several reasons for Matchday 8. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær has resorted to playing it safe as the Norwegian has opted to draft some of the eye-catching starlets from the club’s under-18 and under-23 teams.

United will be altering their team as many of their prominent stars could be missing the clash against Leicester for either being fatigued, injured, or due to Covid restrictions. The most intriguing news is that both centre-backs of United remain ruled out with injuries. Not having the aid of Harry Maguire and Raphaël Varane could tip the scales massively in favor of the Foxes.

The eight youngsters were handpicked, by Solskjær, himself to make up the numbers for their East Midland visit. The starlets trained alongside first-team players like Dean Henderson, Tom Heaton, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Alex Telles, Phil Jones, Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, and Marcus Rashford.

The Blue Army has its fair share of problems too, but they tend to thrive when the odds are massively against them. That will be the approach for Brendan Rodgers‘ men, who would have their hands full dealing with the strongest United team in recent memory.

The second generation of former Leicester City stars

Amongst the unfamiliar youngsters plucked, two names stick out of the rest. Charlie Savage and Charlie Wellens, sons of former Foxes stars Robbie Savage and Richie Wellens, have been picked for representing Manchester United. Other starlets include Alvaro Fernandez, Bjorn Hardley, Dillon Hoogewerf, Joe Hugill, Marc Jurado, and Charlie McNeill.

Robbie Savage came to Leicester City under the managerialship of Martin O’Neill. He played for the club for five years between 1997–2002. He reached the League Cup final twice while playing for the Foxes and winning the silverware during the 1999–2000 season after failing to do so previously.

Wellens Snr played for Leicester City between 2009–2013. He was City’s biggest signing of the summer. He was named by BBC Sport as the club’s key player for the 2009–10 season. The midfielder featured in most of the matches under Nigel Pearson. The team that reached the playoff semi-finals but eventually lost to Cardiff on penalties. He won the club’s player of the year award in 2011.
