Leicester legend may leave due to Champions League shortcomings
A Leicester City legend may leave King Power Stadium due to the Foxes’ Champions League shortcomings. This is what Kasper Schmeichel has said.
In all honesty the goalkeeper, who has been marvellous overall for Leicester over the last 10 years that he’s been No.1 at the club, is not enjoying his most notable spell with LCFC. While here Schmeichel contributed massively to lifting trophies such as the Championship, the FA Cup, the Community Shield and the most coveted Premier League.
Denmark’s stopper is clearly one of the more prominent, effective and definitely the most decorated player in that position in leicester’s history. However, everything – certainly all good things – sadly comes to an end at some point.
Many supporters have noticed a decline in the ‘keeper’s performances on average; Schmeichel’s rather primitive style flails slightly in the modern world of goalkeeping. Not coming to claim corners is something you’ll here lots about from the Blue Army.
Distribution by foot is so inefficient and inefficient for the 35-year-old that he often negates the Foxes’ play and causes unnecessary issues in games when the team actually has a chance of winning. Sending the ball flying out into touch on a simple pass most footballing schoolchildren could complete, has been noted.
Anyway, it is not my place to slam the LCFC hero too much, nor do I wish to do so. Although it is within my remit to critique the squad and he is seemingly one of the current problems. Though that is not to say there is no chance of him reverting to one of the crucial cogs in a fully functioning Leicester City team. I am not yet advocating a change of the guard in net, but Schmeichel might have other ideas.
When recently speaking about his future, the goalie said this:
"“It must be said that when I look back and one day I’m done, it’s not having played enough Champions League, it gnaws at me and will always do so until it happens again,” he told Discovery+.“It is a complex situation, but I definitely think that before I stop, I must also try to play somewhere else.“I’m very open. It does not have to be for money or anything. I have to choose it because it’s the right thing to do, because it’s a place that wants something.“I’ll never go to a place where I just have to enjoy life, I can not imagine. Right now I have everything I have ever dreamed of – but I still want more.”"
We all remember the King Power club’s consecutive struggles and ultimate failure to qualify for the Champions League over two years. Meanwhile, it would be a big surprise to us at Foxes of Leicester if the Dane was given an opportunity at an established UCL outfit at his age, as well as due to the aforementioned reason of being partially old-fashioned. Yet a club not used to playing regularly in European competitions may well attempt to sign Schmeichel.
