Rodgers explains why he dropped the zone after months of failing
What Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers said about the overdue, crucial change he’s made to defending set-pieces following his own embarrassments.
Believe me, Leicester supporters and bloggers like ourselves are absolutely fed up entirely with discussing the Northern Irishman’s approach to corner and free-kick protection. Basically the boss should have identified the issue last season and completely scrapped his zonal marking system. It was inefficient then and is now.
Why it was a problem is that goals were consistently conceded due to the players not being proficient in executing the style. That includes first choices Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu. Continuing down to peripheral personnel such as Dan Amartey, Jannik Vestergaard and anyone else who’s floundered in the zone.
Therefore the King Power gaffer should have altered, then destroyed and rebuilt months ago. He did not. In fact, earning the ire of Foxes supporters, Rodgers claimed in November that the calamitous defensive work was a recent problem – it was not. The Blue Army began to turn on the former Liverpool man in droves after he lied there.
Surely Rodgers knew he was telling an untruth?! Certainly, we all did. Finally, after allowing another two pathetic finishes under the hybrid zonal marking tactic against Manchester City, Rodgers changed to a more traditional man marking approach. Thank the Lord.
Jason Bourne, Leicester fan and TalkSPORT reporter, detailed Rodgers’ explanation for reverting below:
Next match for Leicester City
There is not much chance for the east Midlands team to enjoy respite – or for ‘BR’ to work with the players on the new corner defending method – as they face Norwich City.
Unfortunately for the Canaries, they are almost certain for relegation at this stage. Their ideas and strategies definitely need reassessing if they are ever to return to the Premier League at some point.
