Leicester may get a chance to offload a bad signing
Hopefully a Premier League rival will offer Leicester City the chance to potentially offload a poor signing, as other clubs suffer injury nightmares.
When the Foxes acquired Ryan Bertrand for free when he allowed his Southampton contract to expire, I must admit I was quite optimistic about the signing. It is not often that Leicester sign a former England international who is still young enough to do the business – for nothing.
If you are a regular reader here you’ll remember me saying as much in the summer. Following this, Bertrand produced a thrilling display in preseason; two assists in one match in particular made for buoyancy in the Blue Army with regard to the left-back.
I specifically admire the modern, very attacking fullbacks; if deployed and utilised correctly, they can be devastating to any unprepared opposition. Chelsea’s ex-player was of the initial wave of this style being so prevalent in the English top-flight.
Yet the defensive man, who will turn age-33 in the summer, suffered when contracting COVID and has not been able to return to decent form since. In fact, youngster Luke Thomas has taken his place and surpassed the good work Bertrand had in the bank in the process.
Luckily for the east Midlands outfit, there might be a way for all parties to be satisfied as an opportunity for a swift move for Bertrand could have arisen. His one-time club, the Blues, are said to be considering the defender as cover for the injured Ben Chilwell, among other options.
Leicester City prepare for FA Cup title defence versus legendary boss
While an extended break for the Foxes after the cancellation of their previous outing will have helped the team become more fit, as well as possibly enabling previously injured players and illness-affected personnel to recover, the roster is absolutely down to its barebones.
However, some may view this as scope to use or debut some new, young LCFC talent in the eleven or as substitutes. It will certainly be fascinating to see what transpires before and during the game.
