Rodgers bites back at critics over cancelled Everton game
By Will Kennedy
However, the real tipping point for Adrian was Leicester loaning out 20-year-old Jacob Wakeling to Barrow for the rest of the season. Wakeling hasn’t played a minute of senior football for City, nor has he made the bench.
Durham angrily tweeted this:
To say that he is clutching at straws is an understatement. In his mind, football players aren’t allowed a social life – even if they are at least double vaccinated – and a club isn’t allowed to postpone a game if they only have 8 fit senior outfield players. And that the competition and game between the Watford and the game between Everton will be two very different levels of competition.
With all that being said, Adrian Durham and bad takes are a match made in heaven.
Leicester City boss’s response
Understandably, Brendan Rodgers was agitated at the criticism aimed towards his squad – even though this was the 19th game in the Premier League to be pushed back due to COVID.
Ahead of his squad’s visit to Burnley, Rodgers spoke to the press and said this:
"“For Everton (due to take place on Tuesday before being postponed), according to the Premier League rules, we had to have 13 players and goalkeeper, but we had eight, so the game didn’t go ahead. The return of players gives us a chance to get on with the fixtures. That’s what we’ve already done. Norwich (postponed on New Year’s Day) wasn’t ourselves. The Everton game was put in by the Premier League, but it wasn’t a scheduled game. We want to play games. Hopefully we can have players coming back which thickens the squad and allows us to get on now.” Brendan Rodgers, LCFC.com"
Football teams and players will always be criticised by the press, but it does feel as if the injury crisis at Leicester has been treated differently to other Premier League sides. Liverpool got a lot of sympathy last season with their crisis, and Newcastle and Norwich have also been treated with understanding, whist the Foxes’ situation seems to have been blamed on the players themselves.
Personally, I’m glad Rodgers has bitten back and has had his say on the matter. Hopefully the critics can move on to a new topic now, and Leicester can focus on building back their squad and succeeding in such a congested fixture list. Meanwhile, Durham has started a war of words with Burnley and their postponement. Some things never change.
