How will Leicester City lineup versus Tottenham Hotspur?
I anticipate a change in the winger’s composition, even with Ademola Lookman staring centrally. Harvey Barnes and Lookman will probably operate as the two “wide-forwards”, although both seemingly suit the left-side, it will most likely be Barnes operating from that side and Lookman drifting over to the right. Ayozé Pérez was good against Watford, but Lookman’s extra qualities (goal-scoring threat, pace, reception of the ball) will outweigh the Spaniard’s relentless off-the-ball pressing.
Removing Lookman from the striker position allows Patson Daka to return. The speculation was that the Zambian-forward was ready to face Burnley, and the few extra days rest should enable an even fresher version of the sharpshooter. It’s undeniable how instinctive he is inside of a goal-scoring setting, and utilising a player that’s comfortable as the ST is a lot more beneficial than fielding a winger there — despite putting in a very good performance.
With all that considered, it would be a 4-2-3-1 formation, although capable of manoeuvring to a back-three if required. Thomas’ qualities are better suited to inverting as a third centre-back than Daley-Campbell, and Barnes can operate as a wide-midfielder to facilitate the formation change. It’s important to have this flexibility, as Conte’s known for utilising three-back formations and experiencing a lot of joy with them — particularly in the wing-back positions.
I would opt for a defensive back-three to neutralise this, then adjust to the 4-2-3-1 in building phases to play through the lines. Have both Tielemans and Dewsbury-Hall offer (staggered) through the lines — as a pathway centrally to Maddison, and pin Spurs’ wing-backs by pushing both wingers — Lookman and Barnes — high. Daka’s movement should occupy two of the three centre-backs, meaning Maddison’s late runs into the box could be in isolation and rewarding.
There’s still a few days before the game on Wednesday, and in the current iteration of the rules in the Premier League, anything can happen. At the moment, this is seemingly the best setup for Leicester City with the players available — should the fixture go ahead.
