The two clubs that are most interested in signing Youri Tielemans
By Will Kennedy
A move to Barcelona may sound luxurious to some, but the Catalan club are still at crisis point. After major systemic financial mismanagement, they lost Lionel Messi in the summer for free, and yet issues at the club mean that the Spanish giants still need to offload several players in order to comfortably sign new talent. In other words, Barcelona are a poisoned chalice. If Youri wanted to play for them, it may be worth penning a new deal at Leicester and then waiting a few years before moving there.
Other names that the Mercury have listed are Real Madrid and Manchester City. Real are all but signing French superstar Kylian Mbappé in the summer, so may struggle with the finances of signing Tielemans, but it is one that can’t be ruled out. Man City, however, will have the finances to make a move for the Belgian, especially if they view him as a long-term replacement for İlkay Gündoğan, but midfield isn’t necessarily a position that the Citizens need to improve on right now – their priority will be on signing a striker.
Naturally, because of his talent, Tielemans will be courted by many clubs, including Leicester who would love him to stay. What we can guarantee is that Youri will continue to give his all to the club who helped revive his career in 2019. It is a big summer coming up for the Belgian, don’t expect this story to conclude for some time.
