The toughest time of England captain Harry Kane’s career, according to the Tottenham Hotspur striker himself, was while he was on loan at Leicester City.

Some people reading this article – especially those who are fairly young or didn’t follow the Foxes in 2013 – won’t be aware that Kane has played for Leicester at professional level. In fact, the loanee spent a few months with the east Midlands side in the 2012/13 push for promotion from the Championship.

Of course, the quest ended in devastating fashion for the King Power club, as unreal late defeat to Watford set LCFC back somewhat. Although, the drama was not over in Leicestershire, because just three years later they had forgotten that dreadful loss and lifted the Premier League trophy. The last laugh, indeed.

Meanwhile, Kane’s time on Filbert Way wasn’t overly fruitful: he scored on his King Power Stadium debut, but faded soon afterwards. He even began to question his own skill set at that point. In part due to the failings in a lesser league than his parent club’s, Tottenham. Overall, the 28-year-old only featured for the Foxes on 13 occasions.

Harry Kane’s Leicester City spell made him unsure of himself

One intriguing factor of Kane’s period at Leicester is the photograph at the top of this piece. Not only is the current Three Lions skipper – pictured circa 2013 – a substitute under Nigel Pearson’s tutelage, the former is sitting on the bench alongside fellow future England man, Jamie Vardy.

Now, Pearson knew, or knows, what he is doing at any outfit. Yet this is a humorous shot which tells a story of how athletes can develop steadily. In addition, some may say that it goes to show greatness can be under a manager’s nose – and they may be even oblivious.

Kane recently spoke of the loan:

"“It’s probably the Norwich and the Leicester ones (loans) for sure were the toughest times I had in my career.“I found myself on the bench a lot, played a few games and didn’t quite do it.“It was probably the time when I thought to myself ‘if I am not playing for Leicester, who were in the Championship at the time, how can I play for Tottenham?'”Leicester Mercury"
