Watford’s defensive woes

Have a guess who the third and fourth worst defences are measured on expected goals against. It is none other than Watford in third and Leicester in fourth. The Foxes are sixth based on actual goals scored against – so we are a little lucky on that front.

According to Understat, the King Power club’s xGA is heavily contributed to by the obvious: corners. 15.11 xGA has been generated against us from corners, and 15 actual goals scored. On the opposing side, Watford have an xGA of 9.12 from corner play, conceding seven goals. Those numbers are not all that bad. It certainly helps that they have a tall squad. However, it also does not matter when your open play xGA is 46.64 and you have conceded 51 goals from that.

Essentially, all Rodgers must do is to ensure the team create chances. If they create open play chances they will score plenty to win the match. Also, just do not give them the ball and let them run to our goal to get a corner. This requires a ball winner to be played though.
