Where three ideal Leicester signings fit into the XI: Part two, Maxime Lopez
As I’ve already argued in Tielemans’ favour, his defensive work for Leicester City does go largely unrecognised and is also better than that of López’s. The Frenchman averages 1.81 interceptions (58th percentile), 1.38 tackles won (47th percentile), and 1.29 blocks p/90 (26th percentile). A slight drop-off in defensive numbers isn’t the worst-case scenario, and could easily be down to his current role with Sassuolo.
For complete clarity, the two players have a similar number of pressures—indicating that with coaching, López can replicate the pressing structure offered by the Belgian, and video footage would suggest his more agile—mobility—could see him perhaps aid the press more so than his predecessor. It’s perhaps at this point, that I should mention his frame. López is only 5’5″—the same height as Nampalys Mendy—which does mean there will be a slight loss in physicality in the centre, as although Tielemans is only around 5’9″-5’10” he is much broader and stronger.
When looking into Aouar’s best assets, it was his dribbling efficiency that stood out in his profile—one of Europe’s best from the centre of midfield—and López is quite effective in carrying the ball as well. Ranking in the 90th percentile for progressive carries (6.46 p/90) is largely due to his reception of possession being deeper in the pitch but does make him versatile in his ability to progress play.
