Having signed a five-year deal for the Hammers in 2021, his contract currently runs until 2026, so he wouldn’t come at a cut-price. The expected figure is around £25m-£30m, the same amount of money that Leicester City spent on signing Ayoze Perez.

The similarities to Perez don’t end here though, and this is where any potential deal could fall through. Benrahma isn’t a right-winger by trade. In fact, he’s played most of his football on the left of the pitch, but also plays through the middle and on the right when called upon. As per Transfermarkt, he has played 106 games on the left, almost double the amount of games that he has played on the right (65). Judging purely on direct goal involvements, he has 67 from his games on the left, and only 27 from the right of the field.

Considering how much money he would cost the club, Leicester would be far better off signing Ademola Lookman on a permanent deal for £14m rather than the £30m for the Algerian, with both being left-sided players who can fill in on the right. The talent and potential are there to be unlocked, but the Foxes aren’t in a financial position to take that gamble.

Instead, that £30m should be used to sign a top-classwinger who owns the right side of the pitch. For the club, and chiefly for Benrahma, it would be better if both pursued alternative options. His signing is unlikely, but if football has taught us anything, especially when it comes to the transfer window, you can never say never.
