Leicester City’s Callum Wright returned from loan and is looking to follow in the footsteps of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Here is why he will get his chance.

Wright is an interesting prospect. After playing in League One for the 21/22 season with Cheltenham Town, the English midfielder has proved to be a versatile, attack-minded, and prolific talent. Truly, he is following the in the footsteps of other King Power residents.

Harvey Barnes and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall chief amongst them. To go out on loan, impress, and then find yourself in contention for a spot in the Foxes’ 25-man Premier League squad. I myself certainly want to see the player in the side.

Leicester City’s what to know

During the 21/22 campaign, Wright accumulated 37 appearances, nine goals, and seven assists across all competitions for Cheltenham. These are prolific figures. Of course, these are within League One and there exists no solid evidence the midfielder could replicate these numbers.

Nevertheless, we did see a glimpse of what could be to come during Leicester’s pre-season derby against Derby. A 3-1 win with Wright scoring for the King Power club with an impressive instinct to get onto the ball: the same instinct displayed throughout the prior season.

The boss of the fixture – Chris Davies – commented on the impressive start Wright has achieved to his pre-season with the Foxes. Via LeicestershireLive:

"“Callum Wright… did really well when he came on… the way he contributed to the team. He’s a player that you can trust. He worked for the team… He followed in with a striker’s instinct”Chris Davies on LCFC TV following Derby match"

Creative, attack-minded, and a team contributor, Wright offers everything you need a creative midfielder to offer. In fact, it could be suggested the possible backbone of a future midfield is already in place at the team.

Brendan Rodgers could employ a midfield pivot of ‘KDH’ and ‘Wrighty’ to progress the ball and support a more penetrating attacking-midfielder such as Dennis Praet. Such a cooperation could be dominating in high possession games.

Opinion

As a result of his involvement in pre-season and a startling run of form during the previous campaign, I believe the Englishman could be ready for his debut season with the King Power club. Working to replace one of our existing midfielders would be prudent without signing.

However, as always, there is a rather large obstacle: this transfer window. No sales, no signings, a full squad. The Foxes already have a 25-man registered squad. So, they must either sell or they cannot sign or register any new players. This includes our Callum Wright.

dark. Next. Keeping Praet at Leicester is a no-brainer

I believe either Mendy or Choudhury must go to make space for Wright. If we cannot sell Youri Tielemans then he must remain in the starting XI and a secondary starting XI formed from KDH, Wright, and Praet in midfield, possibly even Boubakary Soumare should Praet depart, and Wright be pushed further up field.
