Brendan Rodgers confirms Kasper Schmeichel transfer news
Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the transfer news around Kasper Schmeichel. Here is what we know and how the Foxes can improve.
11 years, 479 games, 147 clean sheets – those are the career stats of the ‘Great Dane’ Kasper Schmeichel at the King Power club. For a long while, he has felt irreplaceable, but now it seems the Foxes are forced to consider a future without.
Previous speculation sounded the No.1 and captain to have agreed terms with Nice, and that Leicester may have also agreed terms on the basis of a replacement being decided upon. There now seems much momentum behind this, although completion still relies on a signing before a sale.
Leicester City to part ways with Danish No.1
According to Owynn Palmer-Atkin on Twitter, during an interview with the Northern Irishman, the gaffer commented on the speculation surrounding Schmeichel. Rodgers did not in anyway deny links.
The Great Dane is assessing his options ahead of his potential move away. The club are not resisting a move for the ‘keeper, who is now seen as replaceable by the East Midlands side. Be that with a current player or an upcoming signing is yet to be seen.
Furthermore, there remains the possibility that Leicester might start the season – for the first time in a long while – without the Dane in net. Now, this could be an opportunity for either the Welsh or second Danish internationals to take the starting spot.
Additionally, a move for the Danish international goalkeeper would also mean a change in club captaincy. There is much debate around replacements and captaincy.
What the Foxes must do
Let Schmeichel go. The veteran shot-stopper has been legendary, and has been our best ever ‘keeper. However, under Rodgers, we do not play a style conducive to his best attributes. We need a more proactive, sweeping keeper with good distribution short and long.
Neither Danny Ward or Daniel Iversen fit the bill exactly for what we require, although I do believe both are good enough shot stoppers to start in goal if necessary for a season. This being said, Iversen should be the one given the shout as he is a little younger and has more to prove.
Should the King Power club sign a replacement, we have already suggested three brilliant additions, but it seems there are myriad stories and little concrete. Alban Lafont would be my preferred choice.
In the situation we sign a first teamer, Leicester must sell either Ward or Iversen. We do not need three over 23’s wasting money and space. Use an U23 as the third choice goalie, keep one, and sign a more stylistically suited player.
