Form has always been the biggest issue for the 25-year-old, and he has been found guilty of blowing hot and cold in previous years – the reason why he hasn’t earned more than his solo England cap – this season though, he is carrying on straight where he left off. Against Brentford he looked deadly, and he contributed the assist to Castagne’s opening goal.

He is, undeniably, crucial to Leicester’s attack – losing his would be a disaster to the club and to Brendan Rodgers. Perhaps it’s a good thing that Newcastle’s valuation was so off.

In 2020 he was rewarded with a contract extension until 2024. Now, with only two years left of that deal remaining, Rodgers and the club will be hoping that they can negotiate a new deal that ties him to the club until at least 2026.

Even though he is entering the last few years of his deal, it doesn’t mean that rival clubs are able to try and barter for a low deal. In fact, given the importance of Maddison and his recent form, Leicester City would be looking for a new club-record fee if he were to go.

The club, and the fans, see Maddison as important to them as Jack Grealish was to Aston Villa, so will be looking for a similar £100m fee for the England international. It’s money that the Magpies have – they have the backing and ownership of the Saudi state to play with – but they must be careful of their spending under FFP rules. For now, Maddison is staying at Seagrave.
