Ex-Premier League players predict bleak season for Leicester
By Akash Roy
Leicester City is yet to gain any confidence from the first two Premier League matchdays. It’s an alarming sight. The club is wavering in making several key decisions that might further derail their progression.
The Foxes have lost five points from an available six to begin their 2022-23 campaign. The first game of the season concluded in memorable fashion as the visitors, Brentford, snatched equalizers to dampen the jovial mood of the opening day. Conceding four goals against Arsenal then exposed the continued fragility in the squad’s defense from last season.
Former Premier League players Glen Johnson and Richard Dunne expressed their concerns in a recent YouTube segment, predicting the King Power club to finish below last season.
"RD: “For me, I’d go Leicester [at tenth]. There’s no signings so far. They struggled towards the back end the last season. It seemed to be whether Rodgers would be there or not.”GJ: “There are rumors about them losing Tielemans as well. If they do then I can’t see them going above here.”"
Both make valid assumptions to predict a top-half finish, as our club is unaware of what will happen until the window closes.
The time to make changes is running out for Leicester City
With fixtures coming thick and fast, Leicester City is yet to plot its moves in the transfer market. The indecisive nature of the club has landed the camaraderie in further jeopardy. Instrumental players like Wesley Fofana and Youri Tielemans have been eager to go elsewhere, but their suitors have failed to make their offers sweeter for Leicester’s consideration.
Others like Çağlar Söyüncü and Jannik Vestergaard have been omitted and stranded by the manager Brendan Rodgers. The possible solution for all the parties involved would be to move on, but both are reluctant to leave.
Amongst such chaos, no new signings have happened, except a third-choice goalkeeper in Alex Smithies. Other teams within the league have reinforced their squad to upgrade their respective qualities from last season. Only Leicester City trails behind. Additional players like Ademola Lookman and former club captain Kasper Schmeichel have left the squad, and no ideal replacements for the former participants have appeared.
Time is ticking, and all of the side’s targets have joined other clubs. It will be a massive challenge to compete. We have already witnessed Rodgers’ questionable substitution and reluctance to start several players inflict grave consequences.
