That comes before allowing him to get a full season under his belt after his long injury lay-off, and then sell him to one of Europe’s elite for a world record fee in the summer of 2023, with the four years remaining on his contract meaning a transfer would command a stunning amount of money. This makes a lot of financial sense for the King Power club, giving them a ton of leverage in negotiations (not only with other clubs, but with the player too) that they wouldn’t have otherwise had.

For now, the Foxes will have to endure the short-term pain of the club being derided in the media, facing accusations of holding Fofana against his will, and the unsettling nature that might bring to the squad throughout the summer. This was surely to be expected, given the way the defender behaved towards his previous club Saint-Etienne, when he was angling for a move to the East Midlands back in 2020, but hindsight might look back on the summer of 2022 as a necessary evil for the club, if it can land a mega fee for their young talent this time next year.
