Exclusive transfer info as Leicester consider signing Jason Denayer
With the sale of Wesley Fofana on the verge of being finalised, Leicester City have found themselves in a precarious position. They seek a competent and reasonably priced replacement in very short space of time.
Leicester have been linked to names such as Edmund Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen and Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg. But in the dying embers of the window, another potential target has been identified, that being 27-year-old free agent Jason Denayer.
Respected journalist Ekrem Konur reported early Tuesday morning that both Wolverhampton Wanderers and LCFC are interested in in signing the Belgian centre half. Konur also told Foxes of Leicester that ‘it is said that he has obviously been offered to Leicester City [by agent, as player is not with a club, FoL assume] and could sign before the transfer window closes after Fofana leaves‘.
The Belgian international made 20 appearances in all competitions for Lyon last season. Yet, after four years with the club, he decided to not sign a new contract in May. If City were to acquire the services of Denayer, it would immediately improve the “Fofanaless” centre back partnership – currently Daniel Amartey and Jonny Evans – exponentially.
Denayer provides a much needed injection of pace to that position, as well as allowing Brendan Rodgers too more easily apply a three centre back formation. That prediction arises due to Denayer’s experience playing in a back three frequently for Belgium.
It seems to be a very low risk transfer if completed, assuming the defender isn’t asking for extremely high wages. Him being a free transfer also gives LCFC the financial flexibility to sign another one of their defensive targets.
Additionally, there should hopefully be very little settling in time for the Red Devils man, as he will be placed into a squad with three of his national team mates. They are Timothy Castagne, Dennis Praet and Youri Tielemans. Although there are positives about this potential deal, it all hangs on the time it takes for the Fofana deal to be finalised, because the closer it gets to the deadline, the less leverage Leicester will have in negotiations.
