Ex-manager of many EPL clubs wants Leicester job
A former boss of a host of Premier League clubs apparently wants the Leicester City job. Would Rafa Benitez be a good choice for the relegation-threatened Foxes if they do indeed sack Brendan Rodgers?
There isn’t even a vacancy for Leicester’s manager position at present. But, supposedly, that hasn’t stopped apparently qualified applicants from testing the Foxes hierarchy’s Rodgers resolve. Rafa Benitez is said to have tested LCFC waters regarding the role, if we believe veteran presenter Richard Keys.
Keys, who was fairly iconic in his position at Sky Sports before being unceremoniously removed, made the claim about the out of work Spanish gaffer on Twitter. Within a rant over Benitez’s recent interview on his poor era at Everton, the beIN Sports ‘anchor’ declared “My friends at Leicester tell me Benitez has applied for that job.”
Admittedly, I grew up really enjoying the rapport and analysis of Andy Gray and Keys, before they were banished. So I am choosing to believe the rumour; while trusting someone with various confirmed and reported irresponsibility issues isn’t easy. Despite the latter being a lifelong Coventry City fan, he could well have associates or mates at the King Power club.
The 65-year-old was once surely well-connected in the Premier League community. Nevertheless, this update is intertwined with what appears to be a personal vendetta against the ex-Liverpool, Newcastle United, Everton and Chelsea (interim) gaffer.
Foxes of Leicester’s verdict on Rafa Benitez at Leicester City
There was a time – I think he was actually linked to the east Midlands club in the past, if my memory serves me – when I would have been, let’s say, satisfied with the Spaniard being installed on Filbert Way. He was once an astute head coach who had a great rapport with his various squads – with results to support his claim.
Whereas in recent times the 62-year-old pretty much seems to have the almost opposite effect in modern posts. He is still a likeable seeming chap, surely with football knowledge second to none. However, especially with the apparent seeking of work, Benitez just doesn’t fit at Leicester.
