Leicester City development star Lewis Brunt looks set to be getting his early first team chances in the first half of this season. Here is why.

The King Power club have called upon Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Luke Thomas, Harvey Barnes, and others in recent years. The development side has been used as a pathway to the senior side or a gateway to EFL and European clubs.

The same fate could fall upon former Aston Villa man Brunt. The defensive midfielder turned centre-back who has also performed at left-back has been brilliant since joining. Currently captaining the U23’s, the English defender is looking for a bright future.

Leicester City talent gets his chance

At the tail end of last season, the Foxes provided the 21-year-old his first chance with first team training. Alongside Tawanda Maswanhise and Wanya Marcal-Madivadua, Brunt started training with the senior side.

According to LeicestershireLive, the original intention of this was to get the player a loan for more consistent senior football. Of course, an injury for much of pre-season prevent this, as well as a major injury to Ricardo Pereira opening a large gap in the squad for a possible promotion.

"“We had hoped that he would be able to get out on loan, but it just didn’t materialise for him. So if he was going to be here, I thought it was important for him to be training and in and around the squad”~ Brendan Rodgers"

Leicester really did not want the player here. The thought was his development. As such, Brendan Rodgers decided the best thing for the English defender would be to train with the senior team, while playing consistently as captain for the youth side.

By choosing to register Brunt for Premier League football, it puts the talent on the radar of EFL clubs for loans in the January window. It also means he might be handed a couple chances here or there.

I believe he will get his chance soon. With Caglar Soyuncu untrusted, Jonny Evans and Wout Faes not infallible or hopefully not omnipresent, there is room for one more player to get in the side and improve the defensive options. Be that signings in the winter or the use of Lewis Brunt.
