That argument can be turned on its head, in that, if defending is such a weak point across the board at City, then adding another defender will simply show the side to be even more incompetent than it has been already. Not only that, but Amartey and Evans could become injured at any juncture, at which point with Soyuncu not likely to return, Rodgers would swiftly have to revert to a traditional 4-back setup.

Leicester are two defeats away from a major crisis, and what they now needed in preparation for five crucial fixtures is some stability – something that has been lacking at the King Power all season. Going to a back three system will put that stability at risk because it is reliant on all its first choice centre-backs staying fit for the whole season.

The transfer window has now closed, so the players currently in the squad at least have some certainty over their short term future. With no further postponements likely, and a straight run of fixtures through to the World Cup hiatus, it’s time for the squad to knuckle down and work together towards fighting out of this mess.

Wilfred Ndidi should no longer be deployed as a central defender, James Maddison should be allowed to flourish creatively, and Jamie Vardy should have his sights set on returning to his ruthless best. They’ve done it before under Brendan Rodgers, there’s no reason that with patience, organisation and a settled structure, that they can’t go on a run now to pick some well-needed points up before the winter break.
