Qatar vs Senegal – Friday November 25 – 1pm GMT
On to a battle of two nations hoping to bounce back after defeat in their opening round of fixtures, with Nampalys Mendy’s Senegal losing with much more dignity than their Friday opponents. His side went down 2-0 to the Netherlands on Monday, courtesy of late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaasen, while hosts Qatar produced a confusingly underwhelming performance in defeat to Ecuador in the curtain-raiser.
Mendy played the full 90 minutes in Senegal’s spirited defeat, and will be expected to feature heavily once again to as his nation attempts to kickstart its tournament. The midfielder will be hoping his name sake between the sticks, Edouard, produces a better performance, after mistakes from the Chelsea stopper led to both Dutch goals.
Another outing would see the Senegalese pick up his 21st cap for Les Lions de la Téranga, in a match where his ball progression will be put to the test with his side expected to have the majority of possession. If Senegal are to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stage, nothing short of three points against Qatar will be required, especially given the ease with which Ecuador brushed the hosts aside on Sunday.
