Ahead of the upcoming January transfer window, it has been revealed that Leicester City are eyeing up a new striker. Although, there has now been an ominous update from Fabrizio Romano who claims another Premier League side have got to him first.

Before the start of the season, the name David Datro Fofana – no relation to Wesley – would have meant very little to football fans. Now, he is touted as being the next big thing.

Fofana, currently 19, plays for Molde in Norway’s top league: the Eliteserien. Having signed there from Ivorian side Abidjan City FC in February, Fofana started brightly in his first half-season for Molde. This season, he’s taken things to a whole new level and has so far scored 15 goals and made five assists in only 24 league appearances.

His impressive form has led him to Côte d’Ivoire’s senior international team for whom he has already made two appearances for, his debut coming at the age of 16. Only valued at 700K by Transfermarkt at the beginning of the season, Molde wants more than £9m for their versatile starlet who can play as a striker and on both wings.

Leicester have been monitoring Fofana’s development, as per LeicestershireLive, eyeing him as a player for the future. With Jamie Vardy not growing any younger, and Kelechi Iheanacho’s place in the squad under question, Fofana could be a long-term option for the team.

Their plans could be scuppered before they even begin though, as the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano has reported that Premier League rivals Brighton have made a move for the youngster. His tweet is below:

Brighton would be a sensible destination for Fofana, and the Seagulls have shown how strong they are at developing young talent with the likes of Enock Mwepu, Moises Caicedo, and Leandro Trossard. Still, they face competition not only from the Foxes, but also from Liverpool.

Any deal struck for Fofana would surely be followed by a loan spell either back at Molde, or at another side. For a young player, the step up from Norwegian football to Premier League football will be a struggle, so his signing should be met with patience as he is a young talent who needs time to adapt.
