Before the break, James Maddison was the most talked about player in the country, having practically forced himself into Gareth Southgate’s England squad, but his stock soon plateaued after receiving 0 minutes in the tournament. Danny Ward’s confidence was sky high, but Wayne Hennessey was preferred between the sticks by Wales boss Rob Page.

Ward did get his chance though after his counterpart’s dismissal against Iran, but was deemed to have been partly-culpable for at least two goals in just over 90 minutes of play. There’s no doubt, however, that his spot in the net for City is not under threat.

Youri Tielemans crashed out in the group stages, along his compatriot Timothy Castagne – the former being substituted at half time in Les Red Devils’ opener. Wout Faes, in glistening form for Leicester pre-tournament, suffered the same fate as Maddison.

Brendan Rodgers has, though, proved in the past that he can start again, and this might be required given the impending low morale of the Qatar returnees. The Northern Irishman successfully rebuilt his reputation after his dismissal by Liverpool, and has done brilliantly to get the Foxes supporters back on side after a wretched start to this campaign.
