Gillingham 0-1 Leicester: FA Cup player ratings
By Ethan Henson
Youri Tielemans – 7
As previously alluded to, the first half saw Foxes playmaker Youri Tielemans make little to no impact on proceedings. The Belgian was far too advanced, which appeared to be a tactical ploy, meaning there was too much distance between he and the defenders he would usually receive the ball from.
The second half was much better, and Tielemans was operating in a more conventional role under a more typical Brendan Rodgers system. The touch was more crisp and the passes were more incisive, meaning there was quicker movement as his side progressed the ball up field.
It was Tielemans’ cross from outside that ultimately led to the game’s only goal, after he had pulled to the right to receive the ball from deep. It’s on the Belgian’s shoulders now to put in some stellar performances for the Foxes, if he wants either a bumper new contract in the summer or an elite club to come calling as his contract ends.
Ayoze Perez – 6
Foxes Fans have become used to the odd frustrating player throughout their time watching their club, and Ayoze Perez can certainly be put into that category at times. Especially over the last few weeks since domestic football’s return, the Spaniard has reminded a portion of the club’s fan base why they have that opinion of him.
Throughout his time at the King Power, there has been a few occasions where the former Newcastle man has had supporters off their seats, and others where they have to remind themselves that he was on the pitch. Today wasn’t quite at that level, but the utility player did seem to disappear a lot.
Perez wasn’t the worst player on the pitch by any stretch, and this type of game really is not one where he will shine. It’s often said that the Spaniard is good for games like this, where he can operate in tight spaces and weave his way out of challenges. However when a side sets up so rigidly to defend, he often telegraphs his movements. That happened far too often.
