Shock Schmeichel claim and Papy Mendy contract report
The legendary Peter Schmeichel makes an eye-opening claim about his son and former Fox, Kasper. Meanwhile there’s a story about Papy Mendy’s contract situation.
Some observers were shocked when Kasper Schmeichel departed King Power Stadium for good in summer 2022. I must admit, I was not aghast. And, in all honesty, as a devout Leicester supporter, I wasn’t that bothered. Apart from the troubling dilemma of replacing him with one of two goalkeepers who were not Premier League-proven.
The Denmark international is a Foxes icon, there is no doubt about that. However, his antiquated play had caused no end of bother in the final season, and possibly earlier. Schmeichel would stay on his line when he could have easily closed down marauding strikers in one-on-ones. That is not to mention the former LCFC man being rooted to the goal line as worrying crosses came into his box which he could have easily claimed. He subsequently often blamed those around him – a real turn off.
Even the fabled Schmeichel family star technique – when they make themselves a ‘big target’ by stretching out every limb like a starfish – was getting him nutmegged by the end of his Leicester career. But worst of all: the kicking. Oh my, it was children’s Sunday League game bad. He couldn’t find a fullback with a compass for much of the time, which invited endless pressure. Brendan Rodgers, boss of the east Midlands team, should shoulder some of that blame for coaching and tactical errors, along with not dropping his No.1.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Schmeichel the younger seemed a good bloke off the field, certainly a reliable squad member. Although, leaving was best for all involved. Amazingly, Peter, his dad, has made a surprising claim. Apparently Bayern Munich were interested in the Nice stopper in January. Yann Sommer was eventually signed as cover from Borussia Monchengladbach instead.
New contract for Leicester City midfielder Papy Mendy? Probably not
Here at Foxes of Leicester, we have always liked Mendy, especially because he follows us on Twitter! We were ecstatic for him after a wonder-goal against Tottenham Hotspur. Most of you will know that his current deal expires at the end of the season. Nevertheless, Rodgers has cast doubt on the Senegalese extending his stay on Filbert Way.
