However, his role is contentious. With three goals in 18 Serie A fixtures, the player is certainly forward thinking and likes to get towards the edge of the box. At the same time, according to FB Ref, Ferguson is within the 89th percentile for interceptions, 79th for tackling, and 77th for aerial duels. Clearly, the midfielder is defensive minded in this regard.

Remember, those stats are based off of comparisons with all players of his position from the top five European leagues and Europe-wide competitions such as the UEFA Champions League. This means, he is one of the best midfielders for getting in-between passes to attackers from opposition midfields.

That is fairly impressive. At the same time, Sofascore illustrates his heat map is very much that of a box to box midfielder. Specifically, the Scottish breakout star likes to move up and down the centre and right of the pitch, only occasionally supporting on the left.

So, stylistically, Ferguson is a defensively adept, aggressive, box to box player who also likes to get towards the edge of the box for second balls and crosses. The player likes to break up passages of play early and finish off chances: he hardly creates or even progressively passes the ball.
