Fellow strugglers Bournemouth also fell at home to their south coast rivals Brighton, but the fact that Leeds and Nottingham Forest faced off against one another meant a pointless haul for City would see them lose at least some ground. Having previously headed a concertinaed block of teams before Palace were dragged into the fight, the Foxes are now very much at its base, and if results go badly on Saturday, could soon be more than a victory’s worth of points away from climbing out of the drop zone.

Aston Villa are genuine European contenders

Since Unai Emery’s appointment last year, Aston Villa have the division’s third most impressive record behind Arsenal and Manchester City. Sitting in 16th when the Spaniard replaced Steven Gerrard, there’s now an outside chance that the Villans could secure Champions League football, lying only six points behind third place somewhat remarkably.

John McGinn is a special player, and his technical excellence shone yesterday alongside Douglas Luiz and Jacob Ramsey. With the evermore prolific Ollie Watkins knocking them in for fun, Villa Park could be set to stage some European fixtures once more.

City will be wanting a favour from the Birmingham-based side this weekend as they entertain Nottingham Forest, a match that Leicester cannot afford to produce an away win. If results go their way, Aston Villa could finish the weekend as high as sixth place.
