Jon Dahl Tomasson’s future amid Leicester City links
By Akash Roy
Leicester City’s attention to a permanent managerial appointment has put Blackburn Rovers’ Jon Dahl Tomasson in the crosshairs.
Dean Smith and his companions have tried to resolve the pressing matters by aiming a quick-fix policy to somewhat of a limited effect. The sacking of Brendan Rodgers did not hand Smith enough time for acclimatization. Naturally, except for a win, the Foxes displayed unconvincing performances, resulting in a dire situation with limited opportunities for a resurgence.
Plenty of things are left to be desired from the manager. Thus, it would not be ideal- as it was not in the first place- to stick with Dean Smith and his philosophies if the King Power club has to take a dip and return straight up after a season into the second division of English football.
This is where the search for a new Championship caliber manager comes in.
Why Jon Dahl Tomasson?
For the board, Graham Potter was the ideal candidate to take over as the in charge of the football club, but the Englishman did not want such a tough assignment when the possibility of relegation loomed at large!
Instead, Leicester focused on finding immediate solutions with Smith. If that contingency plan fails, Tomasson will be in the conversation for the next season and beyond. He is a Danish football manager and former player who is the current head coach of the EFL Championship club.
The East Midlanders must remember the 46-year-old manager when the Riversiders eliminated the Foxes from the Fifth Round of the FA Cup in February. Despite a seventh-placed finish, Blackburn Rovers were in the mix for achieving the qualification spots for the promotional play-offs on a shoestring budget.
With 55 games already under his belt, the Danish manager is standing with a 45.45% success rate for the Lancashire-based club. Even with a bitter end, they came out on top of Millwall and did their part till the end. It was unfortunate for Blackburn that Sunderland progressed (via goal difference) during the final round of the campaign- in some staggering fashion.
Blackburn on others and Leicester City’s interest
Alongside LCFC, other sides are also eyeing Tomasson. Both Leeds United and Dutch side Feyenoord are actively said to be in such speculations. Though Blackburn Rover’s director of football, Gregg Broughton, has been quick to dismiss any such approach, it would be nothing new knowing the old nature of Championship’s poaching story.
"“Zero, nothing directly, in terms of the speculation, it is a credit to the club for recruiting a head coach that has been allowed to develop. Credit to Jon for the work that he has done. He has a 45 per cent win record, loads of young players brought into the team and clarity on the way we want to play. He has developed a learning environment here and that will continue.”“The club chief did though admit that the side have a plan in place should interested parties come calling this summer. The club has to succession plan for everyone in the club, whether it is your head coach, your centre-forward or your head of the medical department. It’s football, a dynamic environment and you have to be ready for all eventualities.”– Gregg Broughton via LancsLive"
Our final assessment
So will Tomasson be a good choice for City? Preferably, yes. Leicester City has to rid itself and its books of redundant assets and have to rely on its academy outputs with well-thought-out loan moves.
A young and hungry manager with a point to prove can be the best option for the outfit to bank their promotional aspirations upon. Veterans like Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton can guide the team alongside Hamza Choudhury, James Justin, Victor Kristiansen, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Luke Thomas, and Patson Daka- guiding the team into a new era.
