Leicester City’s relegation to the EFL Championship consequently saw the appointment of Enzo Maresca as first-team manager, but his arrival didn’t include the allocation of an assistant manager or any backroom staff as of now. FoL look at some of the candidates, including the formerly exquisite Fox, Esteban Cambiasso. What would he would bring to the role?

City reportedly sought the thoughts of former midfielder Esteban Cambiasso over the appointment of the East Midlands club’s new manager, Enzo Maresca. The Telegraph said that City turned to the retired player for his opinions during the search for their new head coach. The Argentine spent one season with the Foxes as they survived ‘the great escape’ in 2014, and reportedly remains close to the club’s hierarchy.

During his time at Leicester the former number 19 showed top professionalism and an elite winner’s mentality during his short time with City. He also proved very influential in the great escape season on and off the pitch. Cambiasso is a fan favourite and would be a great asset to Maresca’s staff.

The magic midfielder achieved his UEFA Pro Licence after leaving the club in 2015 and studied for his coaching badge in Italy with the new Foxes’ manager, he is also currently out of work. Although the pair have never worked together, Cambiasso could provide a much needed insight into the club and would be a strong assistant manager. With his close relationship with the club’s hierarchy this could also strengthen the possibility of a return to the Midlands.

Cambiasso spent most of his playing career in Serie A and enjoyed ten seasons with Inter Milan helping them to to lift the Champions League trophy and multiple Serie A titles. Over his Leicester tenure, the Argentinian midfielder made 33 appearances and scored five goals to help the Foxes to Premier League survival. The 42 year-old still follows the club and even put a message on social media when Championship football was confirmed at the end of the 2022/23 season. At the moment, links between Cambiasso and LCFC appear to be speculation.

According to TuttoMercatoNet Roberto Vitiello, the former defender of Palermo and Siena, will sign a three year contract as Maresca’s assistant. Although, this update has not been reported by any other outlet or journalist that FoL can tell. It is yet to be confirmed by the club, so it’s difficult to know how true it is.

"“Enzo Maresca has chosen his deputy on the Leicester bench. It will be Roberto Vitiello , former defender of Palermo and Siena, who will sign a three-year contract in the next few hours.”"

The former right-back was Maresca’s assistant manager at Palermo. Therefore it is certainly possible that the two could be reunited at King Power Stadium.
