It’ll be no surprise if Castagne ends up at a mediocre EPL club
It was bound for players to want to leave Leicester City after they were relegated from the English Premier League. The Foxes had gifted players that were too talented for the Championship, such as James Maddison and Harvey Barnes. Those were two players who were not at fault for the relegation and actually gave an opportunity for the team to stay up.
However, one player is about to leave the club shortly and there is a fair argument that he is one of the reasons the East Midlands team is relegated. Timothy Castagne was mediocre for Leicester last season. Now he is bound for a transfer to a mediocre EPL club.
Fulham, Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth are interested in the Belgian fullback. Although these are three clubs in the top tier of English football, this has to be a tough pill for Castagne to swallow. Just a couple of weeks ago, the 27-year-old had interest from clubs such as Arsenal and Juventus.
There is no nice way of putting this. The fact any of those two clubs would want Castagne is ludicrous. Arsenal just missed out on winning the league and Juventus would be playing Champions League football if they didn’t get points deducted from their season. Castagne could not give positive contributions to a club that just faced relegation. What on planet Earth was he going to contribute to a team fighting to win titles?
He is atrocious at defending which is crazy to say about a defender. He doesn’t track back enough, doesn’t win aerial duels, and he sometimes fails to mark up his man. There were too many games last season where the man he was marking was left wide open for a goal. If you watch the games against Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Southampton, you can see him leaving attackers open while he complains to the refs.
This isn’t a Trent Alexander-Arnold situation either. TAA can make up for his defensive mistakes with some brilliance on the attacking end. Castagne at best will give you an average performance on the attacking side of the ball. He’s ok at crossing and his linkup play is what today’s kids like to call “mid”. Plus, he’s careless and clueless on the ball. Watch his almost own goal against Tottenham and you’ll be speechless that he almost secured a move to Arsenal.
