Kasper Schmeichel: the name evokes certain feelings in all Leicester City faithful. In current times, the former Leicester keeper has been once again been mentioned in the transfer rumors. In a shock turn of events, the Foxes Premier League winner is apparently a target of Chelsea Football Club.

According to a recent piece from The Guardian, the West London side have been weighing up their options since shot stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga was given the green light to head to Real Madrid for the season on loan. Madrid were sent scrambling after their number one Thibaut Courtois was  ruled out with a long term knee injury.

Schmeichel has been the starting goalie for OG Nice in the French first division over the last year. They finished ninth in the table last season, with the Danish keeper making 46 appearances throughout all competitions. In his first season with the French side, he managed to keep 13 clean sheets while conceding 47 goals in total.

At 36 years old, Kasper Schmeichel would still seem to have plenty to offer. With keepers playing well into their late 30s these days, Chelsea must be thinking he has plenty left to offer if he is being considered. Still being the starting keeper for his national side, the experienced Dane would bring a calmness to a Blues side flush with young talent.

In my view, I think this move would work for all parties. We saw here at Leicester that Schmeichel still had great presence and poise commanding his box. While he may not be as spry as he once was, he has surely made up for that with experience that he has gained. Even if he doesn’t start and Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino prefers earlier signing Robert Sanchez from Brighton, Schmeichel would still make an excellent back up.

Convincing Schmeichel to play a bit part role could be difficult. Although, with two years left on his contract at Nice, the aging keeper could be persuaded to consider his options if the offer is right. This would also be contingent on the French club not charging a king’s ransom for the player keeping in mind his age. Unfortunately any team CFC approach will know their situation and charge them top dollar.

If Leicester City continue on their current trajectory and end up in the Premier League again come the start of the 24/25 season, it could be an awkward reunion when LCFC meet Chels’ in action once again. What an amazing story it would be if we run into the stopper then or sooner in cup play this season. Foxes fans should prepare themselves for these eventualities if the rumors swirling around come good!
