Jannik Vestergaard says he thought he’d have left Leicester City by now
A few months ago, Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard thought that he would have left the Foxes by now. But the centreback is enjoying a resurgence with the King Power club. Foxes of Leicester offer news and views.
From my experience, the majority of the Blue Army previously wished for Vestergaard to be sold if the price was right. A lot of them didn’t want him at Leicester to begin with. I am sure that many LCFC fans have changed their opinions following the Dane’s good start to the season. He spoke of the surprise turn of events:
"“Our new manager (Enzo Maresca) has a positive style of play with much more possession and it suits my abilities as a distributor from the back. He has a clear philosophy, and much more work is now being done with tactics, which is one of my strengths.“I feel completely back at my level from our European Championships semi-final at Wembley – or our victory over France in Paris a year ago. My appetite for football is huge, and it is very satisfying to feel that the game is going so well.“I honestly didn’t think a few months ago that I would be at Leicester now. It was a shock for the club to be relegated and the most important thing is to get back into the Premier League straight away, so we have to play positive football to win all the time and that’s a perfect style of play for me.“Right now the most important thing for me is to play football again, and with full playing time in the matches, everything quickly clicked into place for me on the pitch, so I feel back in top form.”"
Leicester City defeat Tranmere Rovers to advance to League Cup Third Round
Jamie Vardy and the newly attack-minded Wilfred Ndidi got the goals as the east Midlands side brushed aside the Birkenhead, Merseyside team 2-0. Maresca made a few changes from the starting XI against Rotherham United on the previous Saturday. ‘Big Jan’ was afforded a rest after his impact coming back into the league side. James Justin was involved again, as he was versus Burton Albion in Round One.
Vardy came into the lineup as Maresca used experience blended with some youth often seen in the domestic division. Marc Albrighton was another veteran who was given a run-out from the beginning. Cesare Casadei continued to catch the eye, this time as a starter. Goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk kept up his impressive clean sheet run; Hamza Choudhury began in defensive midfield.
The Italian in charge of LCFC was right to only make a few alterations, which is clear from the result. As well as rejuvenation for some forgotten Foxes, opportunities for exciting youths have justifiably arisen. Not to mention that the gaffer is even managing to find inspiration for struggling but exceptional athletes such as Wilfred Ndidi via new positions or styles, this time in an increasingly attacking role.
